The University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1911 sat on Bascom Hill above Lake Mendota, a campus that had grown from its 1848 founding into one of the largest state universities in the Midwest. Under President Charles Van Hise, the school was known across the state for the Wisconsin Idea, the belief that faculty research should serve farmers, factory workers, and lawmakers alike. Dairy science, agriculture, and engineering drew students from small towns, and the university's ties to the state legislature, which met only a short walk away on the isthmus, made Madison a center of Progressive-era politics. Students of that day knew the campus for its lakeshore setting, its fraternities, and its rivalries on the athletic field.
