Livingston, a village in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin, sat in a mining district that had been digging lead since the 1830s, when the region drew some of the state's first American settlers. By 1911, zinc ore had become nearly as important as lead, and the Biddick Mine was one of the shafts working that ground. Many underground workers were Cornish, Irish, and German immigrants or their sons, who had brought mining skills from Europe. In 1911, Wisconsin was in the middle of Progressive reform under Governor Francis McGovern, but in a mining town like this, wages, shift work, and the price of metal shaped daily life more than state politics did.
