Livingston, a small village in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin, lay in a region that had been mining lead since the 1820s, when prospectors first worked the ground around Galena and Mineral Point. By 1915 zinc had become an important part of the district's output, and wartime demand in Europe pushed metal prices upward and kept shafts and mills busy. A mine such as the Coker operation depended on hoisting crews, ore haulers and mill hands, many of them descendants of Cornish, Irish and German miners who had settled the lead country a generation or two earlier. Mining towns in this part of Wisconsin rose and fell with the metal market, so residents in 1915 would have measured their prosperity by the price of ore and the length of the work week.
