Benton, in Lafayette County in southwestern Wisconsin, sat in the old lead-mining country where prospectors had worked the hills since the 1820s and 1830s. By 1915 the district's output was increasingly zinc as well as lead, and the Martin Mine's surface works, with its shafts, ore-handling structures and waste piles, show a town whose livelihood still depended on the ground beneath it. Demand for base metals rose sharply after war broke out in Europe in 1914, which kept many local operations busy even as older diggings were worked out. Mining families in Benton would have known the place first as a camp of shafts, rail spurs and company housing, with wages, shift work and the risks of underground labor shaping daily life. The photograph records that industry at a moment of wartime demand, just before the region's mines began their long decline.
