Hazel Green, in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin, sat in the old lead region that had drawn miners since the 1820s, and by 1915 zinc ore was becoming the main concern of many local diggings. Demand rose sharply that year as the war in Europe increased orders for zinc used in brass, galvanizing, and munitions, and mining companies in the district pushed to open or expand shafts. The Kennedy Mine's panorama records a working mining camp in that boom, with surface buildings and ore-handling works gathered around the shaft. For the families who lived in and around Hazel Green, the mines set the pace of work, wages, and the town's fortunes, and a strike or shutdown in the district could ripple through every household.
