In November 1915, the Winskill Mine in Wisconsin was one of many workings that fed a state whose mining economy had grown with the rest of the country's industry. Southwestern Wisconsin's lead and zinc district and the iron ranges of the north supplied ore to smelters and steel mills, and wartime demand from Europe that year pushed metal prices and output upward. For the men who worked underground, a mine meant steady wages but also long shifts, dust, and the constant risk of cave-ins and accidents. Mining towns of the period often revolved around a single shaft and its payroll, so a company's fortunes shaped the schools, churches, and stores nearby. Winskill, like its neighbors, would have been known locally as a source of work and of the ore that kept the region's furnaces running.
