Hazel Green, in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin, grew up around the lead and zinc ore beneath the rolling hills of the Driftless Area. Lead miners began working the region in the 1820s, and by 1915 zinc had become a major product alongside lead in the Tri-State mining district. The European war that began in 1914 raised demand and prices for metals, keeping shafts, mills, and rail sidings busy in towns like this one. The Cleveland Mine was one of the working operations that paid local wages, and the men who went underground there would have known the place first as a mining community and only second as a farming town.
