New Diggings, a small village in Lafayette County in southwestern Wisconsin, took its name from the shallow lead pits dug there by early settlers, and in 1915 mining still shaped the community. The Wisconsin lead district had passed its nineteenth-century peak, but mines in the area kept working, and zinc ore was becoming an increasingly important product as the war in Europe, which began in 1914, pushed up demand for base metals. This photograph of the Penna Benton Mine shows the surface works that sorted and hoisted ore, the kind of operation that employed local miners and drew families from farms and nearby towns. For residents of the region in 1915, the mines, the rail connections that carried ore to smelters, and the settlement's old name were the things that defined the place.
