In 1900 the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a stretch of sandstone gorges near the town of Kilbourn, drew steady crowds of visitors who came by rail and then by excursion boat. Tourism had grown up alongside the older lumber trade, when logs cut upriver were floated down the Wisconsin to sawmills. Photographer H. H. Bennett ran a studio in Kilbourn and sold views of the rock walls to these travelers, and his panoramas of the narrow channels let people back home see how the water squeezed between cliffs. For the townspeople, the river's scenery now mattered nearly as much as its timber.
