In 1894 the Wisconsin Dells, then called Kilbourn City, depended largely on visitors drawn to the sandstone gorge the Wisconsin River had carved through the land. Excursion steamboats carried tourists along the narrow channels past rock formations such as the Jaws, and rail connections brought day-trippers and vacationers from Milwaukee, Chicago, and other cities. The photographer Henry Hamilton Bennett operated a studio in town and sold views of these rocks to those visitors, who took the pictures home as proof they had seen the gorge. Lumbering and river trade had shaped the valley earlier in the century, but by the 1890s the scenery itself was the town's main business.
