In 1899 most residents still called the place Kilbourn City, a river town on the Wisconsin River whose sandstone bluffs had drawn visitors since the railroad arrived in the 1850s. Lumber milling and river traffic had long shaped the local economy, but by the late 1890s tourism was becoming the town's main business, with excursion boats carrying sightseers through the narrow gorge. Photographer H. H. Bennett had run a studio there since the 1860s, selling views of the rock formations to travelers who wanted a keepsake of their trip. Overhanging cliffs like the one shown here were among the formations visitors were expected to see and admire, and the area's reputation as a scenic destination kept growing.
