New Richmond, a lumber and milling town in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, was struck by a tornado on June 12, 1899, one of the deadliest storms in the state's history. The local economy rested on sawmills, lumber shipping, and the surrounding farms, and the town had grown alongside the timber trade of the upper St. Croix Valley. The storm killed more than 100 residents and left much of the business district and many homes in ruins within minutes. This panoramic photograph records the wreckage in the aftermath, as survivors, neighbors, and workers from nearby communities began clearing debris and rebuilding. For the people who lived there, the storm became the defining date in the town's memory.
