New Richmond, a small lumber and agricultural town in St. Croix County, western Wisconsin, stood at a busy point in 1912. The region's white pine had been cut heavily over the preceding decades, and the town's sawmills and related woodworking shops had shaped its growth since the 1870s, when the Wisconsin Central line and other rail connections brought settlers and goods into the valley. By 1912 farming in the surrounding countryside, dairy and grain especially, had grown in importance as the timber supply dwindled. Residents of the period would have known New Richmond as a county seat-adjacent community of churches, schools, commercial blocks, and rail yards, with the St. Croix River and its tributaries close at hand.
