Elmwood, a small village in Pepin County in western Wisconsin, looked out in 1912 over a farming district shaped by the Mississippi River valley and the bluffs and fields around Lake Pepin. Like most rural communities in the state at that time, its livelihood rested on dairy herds, grain, and the creameries and cheese factories that turned local milk into products shipped by rail to larger markets. Wisconsin in the 1910s was steadily moving from the wheat farming of earlier decades toward diversified dairy, and small towns like this one depended on that shift for their stores, churches, schools, and lodges. A bird's-eye view from this period would have shown a town whose streets, church spires, and barns were the main landmarks residents knew, and whose social life centered on school events, church suppers, and the weekly rhythm of market days.
