Owen, a small lumber-era town on the Black River in Clark County, Wisconsin, looked out in 1912 over a landscape that the logging boom had already largely stripped of its white pine. Sawmills and the lumber trade had built the community, and by the early 1910s many residents depended on the work that followed the cutting: hauling, milling what timber remained, and clearing cutover land for small farms. Across the state, that transition from timber to dairying and general farming shaped local life, and rural towns like Owen tied their fortunes to the railroads that carried logs, lumber, and farm goods to larger markets. Wisconsin politics in 1912 was also in a reform mood, with the Progressive movement pressing for changes in state government and in the way natural resources were managed. The view shows a town still very much defined by the river and the forest that had once made it.
