Unity, a small community in Clark County in north-central Wisconsin, sat in 1912 at the edge of a long shift from lumbering to farming. Logging had cut much of the region's white pine in the decades before, leaving cutover land that settlers were clearing for dairy and grain farms. Railroads and cooperative creameries connected farm families to distant markets, and the dairy trade was becoming central to the state's economy. Local life revolved around churches, country schools, and township meetings, while the state capital at Madison was debating Progressive-era reforms that many rural voters followed closely.
