Medford in 1912 was the county seat of Taylor County, where the white pine forests had largely been cut over, leaving stumps and sandy ground that farm families were slowly clearing for fields and pasture. Dairy cattle and cheese were gaining importance across the county as lumber fortunes declined, and that shift was reshaping the work available to people in town. The view from above would have shown a compact courthouse town of church steeples, business blocks, and rail-served streets, with homes packed more closely than in the open country beyond. Residents knew Medford as the market and government center for a farming region still finding its footing after the woods were gone, where prices for the next season and the condition of county roads mattered as much as the timber once had.
