Chetek, in Barron County in northwestern Wisconsin, was a lumber town in 1912, when this bird's-eye view was made. Sawmills on the Chetek River and lake had drawn on the region's white pine for decades, and by the 1910s the best timber was largely gone. Local businesses were shifting toward farming, dairying, and the summer trade of visitors drawn to the lakes. Across the state that spring, politics centered on Robert M. La Follette's Progressive movement, which he carried into his presidential campaign that year, and small towns like Chetek followed the contest closely.
