Boyceville, a village in Dunn County in west-central Wisconsin, was in 1912 a railroad and farm town whose economy rested on grain, livestock, and the surrounding farms. The region's white pine had been cut over by then, and many local farmers were shifting from wheat toward dairy cattle, milk, and cheese. Life centered on the depot, the churches and schools, and the main street, where merchants served families who drove in by wagon from the countryside. Residents would have known Boyceville as a quiet shipping point whose fortunes rose and fell with the crops and the prices its farmers received.
