Bloomer, in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, stood in 1912 as a small railroad and farm town on the edge of the state's dairy country. Cut-over pine land had largely given way to dairy herds, and the cheese factories and creameries that dotted the surrounding countryside brought milk wagons and farm families into town on a daily schedule. Rail lines were the town's lifeline, carrying milk, cheese, grain, and livestock out and bringing coal, lumber, and manufactured goods in. Residents in 1912 would have known Bloomer as a dependable market town where the depot, the grain elevators, and the Saturday trade set the rhythm of local life.
