Spring Valley, Wisconsin, in 1912 was a small farming village in the western part of the state, where most families depended on dairy herds, grain, and the railroad that carried their products to larger markets. Creameries, grain elevators, and local stores formed the core of town commerce, and the village's population was modest, with life organized around churches, schools, and seasonal farm work. The period was one of wide political reform across Wisconsin, when the Progressive movement associated with Governor Robert M. La Follette drew many rural voters into debates over railroad regulation, taxes, and direct primaries. A bird's-eye view like this one recorded a community whose streets, rooftops, and fields reflected that agricultural economy and the steady growth of its main business district.
