Wisconsin Dells in 1896 was still called Kilbourn City, a river town cut into sandstone gorges along the Wisconsin River. Lumbering on the upper river, with logs floated down to sawmills, was a major part of the local economy, but visitors were becoming just as important. Excursion trains brought tourists from Chicago and Milwaukee, and boat trips through the narrow channels had become the town's main attraction. Henry Hamilton Bennett, a photographer who worked in Kilbourn City, made many views of these rock formations for sale to travelers. This view from Sliding Rock shows the scenery that drew them.
