Overhanging Rock, photographed in the Wisconsin Dells in 1900, shows one of the sandstone formations that had drawn visitors to the Wisconsin River gorge for decades. By then the town then called Kilbourn City relied heavily on tourism, with excursion steamboats carrying passengers through the narrow channels and railroads bringing day-trippers and vacationers from Chicago and Milwaukee. Henry H. Bennett, a photographer who worked in the Dells region, sold views of these rock walls to visitors as souvenirs. Water had carved the formations over long ages, and local boat operators and hotel keepers built their livelihoods around them. The town would not take the name Wisconsin Dells until 1931.
