Havana harbor in 1911 still held the wreck of the U.S. battleship Maine, thirteen years after it exploded on the night of February 15, 1898, killing 260 of its crew. The blast helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War, and the ruined hull became a familiar sight on the waterfront for Havanans and American visitors alike. Salvage work on the sunken ship was under way in 1911. Cuba was then a young republic led by President José Miguel Gómez, whose government depended heavily on sugar exports shipped through this same harbor. The scene reflects a port of docks, shipping and commerce, shaped by lingering American influence.
