This 1891 map shows Bedford City, Virginia, as its town plan stood at the end of the nineteenth century, when the community was the seat of Bedford County and sat in the foothills at the edge of the Blue Ridge. Maps of this kind were often drawn from an elevated viewpoint so that streets, principal buildings, and rail lines could be read at a glance, which made them useful to residents, merchants, and insurers alike. Look closely at how the street grid meets the railroad and the surrounding farmland, since those patterns show how the town grew along transportation routes in the decades after the Civil War.
