Roanoke is the focus of this view, drawn from above so the town's streets, rail yards, and church spires spread out against the hills at the foot of the Blue Ridge. The city was still young in 1891. It had taken the name Roanoke only in 1882, replacing the older name Big Lick, and its growth was closely tied to the railroads that converged there. Bird's-eye views like this one were meant to show buildings and streets in careful detail, so they also served as promotional pictures for a growing town. The rail lines and the surrounding terrain are worth studying, since they explain much of the layout.
