This 1891 perspective map presents Staunton, Virginia, as if seen from an angled, elevated viewpoint, with streets, rooftops, and principal buildings drawn in miniature across the town. Staunton sits in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of the Blue Ridge, and its growth by the 1890s reflected its role as a county seat and rail and trade center in the valley. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the late nineteenth century, when they served as both civic portraits and promotional records of a town's streets, churches, schools, and businesses. Look closely at the margins and the labeled buildings to see how the town presented itself at the time.
