Few towns in the Blue Ridge foothills were laid out as quickly as Buena Vista, which was platted in the late 1880s and named for the 1847 Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War. This 1891 map records the young town at a moment when its streets, lots, and early buildings were still taking shape. Maps from this period often show building materials, footprints, and how the land was divided, which makes them useful for tracing how a boom-era community first organized itself. Its bird's-eye framing also helps explain the town's layout to anyone studying the Shenandoah Valley's late-nineteenth-century growth.
