Few cities were drawn from as high above as New York in 1856, when this lithograph presents Manhattan's street grid, its two rivers, and the harbor as a single sweeping panorama. By then the island had grown into a city of more than half a million people, and its rapid expansion, including the northward push of the street plan, is visible in the orderly rows of blocks. Bird's-eye views like this were printed in quantity and sold to residents, merchants, and visitors who wanted a picture of a booming city they could hold in their hands.
