Cottage City, on the north shore of Martha's Vineyard, was a summer resort in 1890, a decade after it became a separate town from Edgartown in 1880. Its origins lay in the Methodist camp meeting grounds that had been laid out since the 1830s, where worshippers lived in tents and later in small, brightly painted cottages with ornamental trim. By 1890 those religious summer quarters had grown into a seaside community that drew visitors from Boston, Providence, and other mainland cities by steamer. Its economy rested on lodging, boarding, and the steady arrival of holidaymakers, and Islanders and summer residents alike knew the place for its lively harbor, hotels, and the dense rows of cottages that gave the town its name.
