Housatonic, a mill village in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts, stood in 1890 as a working community strung along the Housatonic River, which powered the factories that gave the place its livelihood. Its mills and the railroad that served them tied it to larger markets, and the village's quarries and factory yards drew workers and families from the surrounding hill farms. The town was part of the broader Berkshire economy, where manufacturing and the summer trade of wealthy visitors from New York and Boston shaped daily life in different ways. Residents of the period would have known Housatonic first for its river mills and the steady rhythm of its shifts, and this drawing preserves the streets, churches, and industrial buildings of a town that was then at the height of its nineteenth-century growth.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Housatonic, Massachusetts, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
