Manchaug, a mill village in the town of Sutton in Worcester County, Massachusetts, appears here in 1890, at the height of the region's textile era. Water from the Mumford River turned the wheels of the mills that gave the village its work, and the mill houses, boarding blocks, and churches clustered close to the water. Like many central Massachusetts mill villages, Manchaug drew workers from across New England and from French Canadian and Irish families who came to find jobs in the mills. Worcester, the county seat and a growing manufacturing city, lay a short distance away, and its rail connections tied small factory towns like this one to larger markets. For residents in 1890, the village was known first as a place of mills, the rhythm of the shift whistle, and the close-knit life that grew up around it.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Manchaug, Massachusetts, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
