Glendale, a mill village in the town of Stockbridge in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, sat along the Housatonic River in 1890, and water power from the river had long shaped where its factories and houses were built. Mill work was the main source of livelihood, and many families lived in compact rows near the works. Across the Berkshires, wealthy summer visitors from New York and Boston were drawing new hotels, carriage roads and rail traffic into the surrounding towns, so the valley's older industrial life was changing alongside the summer trade. Most residents would have known Glendale first as a working community defined by its river, its mills and its daily connection to the wider valley.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Glendale, Massachusetts, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
