Graniteville, a mill village in the town of Westford in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, was built around textile manufacturing along Stony Brook, and by 1886 its economy rested on the cotton mill and the workers' housing clustered around it. New England's cotton industry was at its height in the 1880s, and mill towns across the region drew families from rural Yankee farms, Ireland, and French Canada to run the looms and spinning frames. Residents of Graniteville would have known the village by its mill whistle, its company-owned tenements, and its daily rhythm of shift work, while the broader town of Westford remained a farming and civic community with its own church and school life. The 1886 map shows the mill complex, its dams and water sources, and the rows of houses that depended on it, offering a close record of a village whose fortunes tracked the cloth trade.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Graniteville, Massachusetts, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
