Haydenville sat in the Mill River valley of Williamsburg, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, in 1886, a village whose life ran on water power and the mills strung along the stream. Its people still measured their recent history by the spring of 1874, when the dam at the upper reservoir gave way and a wall of water swept down the valley, destroying mills, homes, and bridges in Haydenville and neighboring villages and killing more than one hundred people. Rebuilding took years, and by the mid-1880s the valley had returned to the steady routine of factory work, household gardens, and church and lodge gatherings that defined village life across western Massachusetts. Residents looking at a map like this would have known the place as a small industrial community tied by road and rail to nearby Northampton, the county seat, and to the wider Connecticut River country.
