Leominster, Massachusetts, in 1886 was a manufacturing town in north Worcester County, and its comb trade had made it a regional name. Factories there worked in horn, then in hard rubber and celluloid, and they drew labor from nearby farms and from immigrant families who came to work the mills. The Fitchburg Railroad linked the town to Fitchburg and onward to Boston, moving finished goods out and raw materials in. Mill owners and shopkeepers in the town's commercial center shaped its civic life, and its churches and schools reflected a community that depended closely on the factory whistle.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Leominster, Massachusetts, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
