North Leominster, a village in the town of Leominster in Worcester County, Massachusetts, was drawn in 1887, a period when the surrounding town was known across New England for its comb factories. Leominster had long worked wood, and by the 1880s its shops and mills were turning out combs and related goods that were sold well beyond the state. The village's fortunes were tied to the railroad that ran through the town, which carried raw materials in and finished goods out, and to the mill workers and shopkeepers who lived close to the factories. Residents in 1887 would have recognized the map first by its churches, schoolhouses, and the commercial blocks along the main road, and they would have known the place as a working community rather than a resort or a farm town. Its streets, lots, and buildings are preserved in the drawing as they stood at that moment.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of North Leominster, Massachusetts, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
