In 1878 North Attleborough was the northern village of the town of Attleboro in Bristol County, Massachusetts, and it would not become a separate town until 1887. Its livelihood rested on jewelry and metalwork, and for decades small shops and factories in the district had produced gold and silver goods and watch cases. The Boston and Providence Railroad, which had served the region since the 1830s, linked these workshops to markets in Providence and Boston. Residents knew the village as part of the wider Attleboro jewelry trade, and its mills and shops gave the community a working character that shaped its churches, schools, and civic life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of North Attleborough, Massachusetts, drawn in 1878. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
