In 1878 Quincy was still a town on the south shore of Boston Harbor, and its economy rested on granite. Quarries on its hillsides supplied stone for buildings and monuments across New England, and the Granite Railway, opened in 1826, had carried blocks to tidewater for the Bunker Hill Monument. Stonecutters, many of them immigrants from Ireland and Scotland, worked in sheds and yards near the quarries, and their wages shaped the town's neighborhoods and churches. Quincy also drew visitors who knew it as the birthplace of John Adams and John Quincy Adams, whose homes stood near the center of town. This view of the streets, mills, and rail lines records a community that had not yet become the city it would be incorporated as in 1888.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Quincy, Massachusetts, drawn in 1878. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
