North Adams, in the northwestern corner of Massachusetts, was in 1881 a mill town built along the Hoosac River at the foot of Hoosac Mountain. Its fortunes rested on textile and manufacturing works, and the arrival of the Fitchburg Railroad through the Hoosac Tunnel, completed in 1875, had made the place a busy rail junction and drawn new workers from across New England and Quebec. The town was a city in name only after its incorporation in 1895, so in 1881 it still had a village-scale civic life of churches, schools, and a growing population of mill families. Residents would have known the valley for its industry and its tunnel, the long bore that had consumed decades of effort and money before opening.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of North Adams, Massachusetts, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
