Nantucket, Massachusetts, in 1881 was a town still adjusting to the end of its whaling era. The island's whaling fleet had been the foundation of its wealth for more than a century, but the industry collapsed after the Civil War, and the last Nantucket whaling voyage sailed in 1869. Many families had already left for the mainland or for whaling ports elsewhere, and the town's population was a fraction of what it had been during the 1840s. Residents increasingly turned to the summer trade, as steamers brought visitors across Nantucket Sound and the old sea captains' houses on Main Street were kept up as much for their history as for their use. The town's Quaker past, its cobbled streets, and its harbor were the things islanders most often pointed to when describing their home.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Nantucket, Massachusetts, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
