Nantucket and the eastern half of Martha's Vineyard in 1776 were sea communities whose livelihoods rested on the water. Nantucket's whaling fleet, built on sperm oil and whale products, sailed from its harbor to distant grounds, and Quaker merchants there handled much of the trade. The war was disrupting those routes, as British warships patrolled the coast and Atlantic voyages grew risky. Edgartown, on the Vineyard, was also a whaling and shipping port, and island men knew the shoals and channels around both islands intimately. A chart of these waters would have mattered to pilots, privateers and naval officers who needed to read the dangerous shallows safely.
