Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1881 was a manufacturing city on the Connecticut River, and its mills drew their power from the water falling over Hadley Falls. By then paper was no longer the only product, as silk weaving had also taken hold in several large mill buildings. Railroad sidings ran alongside the mill yards, carrying raw materials in and finished goods out to markets across New England and New York. Residents who walked the streets shown on this map would have measured their days by the mill whistles, the shift changes, and the steady work of the canals that kept the wheels turning.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Holoyoke, Massachusetts, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
