Needham Heights, a village within the town of Needham in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, sat about a dozen miles west of Boston in 1887. The Boston and Albany Railroad's line through the town had made it practical for people to live in the countryside and work in the city, so the village was changing from farmland into a commuter settlement. Its houses, churches, and small shops clustered near the railway and the rising ground that gave the district its name. Residents of the period knew Needham as a quiet town of farms and village streets within easy reach of Boston, and the growth of the 1880s was reshaping that identity.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Needham Heights, Massachusetts, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
