Northborough, a farming and mill town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, was drawn in this 1887 bird's-eye view at a time when central Massachusetts was still shaped by water power and the railroad. Small mills along the Assabet River turned out goods for regional markets, and the nearby city of Worcester, a growing center of manufacturing, drew workers and produce from surrounding towns like this one. Most residents would have known Northborough as a community of village streets, churches, and schoolhouses, with farms reaching to its edges. The view records each building as it stood in 1887, so it doubles as a record of which houses, mills, and churches were there before the twentieth century changed the town.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Northborough, Massachusetts, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
