West Medway, Massachusetts, in 1887 was a small mill village in the Charles River valley of Norfolk County, where its economy rested largely on manufacturing powered by the river and by the rail line that ran through the area. The village was part of the town of Medway, and its residents worked in local factories and related trades while the surrounding farms supplied food and labor. Mill buildings, workers' housing, and the churches and schools of a close-knit community would have been the familiar landmarks of daily life. Those who lived there would have known the village as a place defined by its water power, its factories, and its position between the older farming towns and the growing Boston region.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of West Medway, Massachusetts, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
