Toledo's 1876 bird's-eye view was drawn from a high vantage point so that the whole city reads at once: the Maumee River bending toward Lake Erie, the rail lines converging on the downtown, and rows of houses laid out block by block. Maps like this were commissioned by local lithographers and sold to residents and businesses, who often appear as tiny numbered buildings keyed to a list in the margin. The 1870s were a boom period for these city views across the Midwest, when a growing industrial town could show off its factories, churches, and streets as a point of civic pride. Look closely at the smaller details, since the artists often added ships, trains, and street traffic to suggest a city in motion.
