Chicago is the subject here, drawn from a high angle so the lakefront, the river and the street grid can be read at a glance. Bird's-eye views like this were a staple of 19th-century American city promotion, aimed at residents and businesses who wanted to see their town as a thriving, orderly whole. Chicago made an especially strong subject because the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the downtown, and the rapid rebuilding that followed gave these views a powerful story of recovery. The fine street-level detail is worth a close look, since it shows how densely the city had filled in.
