An aerial view of the Library of Congress, one of the building's exterior views taken from above, was made in 1933 by photographer Joe Roberts. The caption card places the subject in Washington, D.C., and lists the Library's own exterior among its tracings, which suggests the picture was made as a documentary record of the complex. Around that date the Library's main building on Capitol Hill, completed in 1897, was the national library's principal home, and aerial photography was still a relatively new way of recording large civic buildings and their grounds.
