An aerial view of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., taken sometime between 1921 and 1922, when the building was already a fixture of the capital's skyline. The Library's main building on Capitol Hill had opened in 1897, and by the early 1920s it held a rapidly growing national collection, so an overhead view like this one captures the institution at a moment of expansion. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of glass negatives that documented Washington and its surroundings in the early twentieth century. Note the faint streaks and blemishes on the glass, which reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than anything in the scene itself.
